What is Futsal?
With origins in Uruguay, and made famous by Brazil over the past 70 years, the UK is finally waking up to the magic ball of Futsal. The 5-a-side game is usually played indoors and closely follows 11-a-side rules but encourages minimal physical contact and the specially designed low-bounce ball improves ball skills and results in fast-flowing, dynamic football.
Why should I play it?
The game embraces everything that has made the Brazilian, Spanish and Portugese players so skilful and quick on the ball. The ball lends itself to rapidly improving ball control by being on the floor more often than in the air, which gives players more touches than in other games.
The game is generally played indoors but as it closely follows the rules of 11-a-side football, you can easily transfer the skills between games. The game encourages tactical thinking and constant, fast-paced movements which will not only enhance fitness levels but also improve strategic thinking.
Where can I go with it?
There is a clear development path within the game. Young players can start playing in local leagues where technical progression is paired with friendly competition to improve ability and introduce players to the game. There will also be the chance for young players to compete in regional and national competitions for Futsal glory!!
Older players can also introduce themselves to the game through local leagues where the emphasis is on participation and competition, the leagues will be fiercely contested within the strict rules and the best teams or players will be able to represent their region in inter-county and national tournaments. At the highest level of the game, club players are able to represent the country in UEFA and FIFA international competitions and potentially represent the home nation.
I'm interested...where can I play it?
